The origin of Vachanamrut- The beginning

On November 20, 1819 Lord Swaminarayan was seated in the darbar of Dada Khachar in Gadhada. He heard a faint voice of someone singing kirtans. It was late in the night and he wondered, Who must be singing these kirtans?’ The voice was strong and deep.

He sent one of his attendants to go to the Dharamshala of saints and check who was singing the kirtans. He went, but he did not confirm who was singing, he just guessed by the voice that it was Brahmanand Swami who was singing the kirtans. He came back and said, it is Brahmanand Swami, Lord Swaminarayan was not satisfied, so he decided to go and check Himself.

When he came to the Sadhu Dharmashala, everyone was surprised to see that it was in fact, Muktanand Swami who was singing the Kirtans, as oppposed to everyone’s assumption that it must be Brahmanand Swami singing the kirtans. Muktanand Swami was singing in Bihaag raag, with his favourite Saroda and his disciple Adharanand Swami.  (Click here for Kirtan)

Hearing this, Shriji Maharaj said,” I am never tired or bored of listening to kirtans and stories of God.” He was interested in the sentiment of love and affection one had for God while singing kirtans, not just the musical technicality. This incident is recorded in Haricharitramrut Sagar (21.1) and this is how the Vachanamrut began.
